At the 2018 International Armoured Vehicles (IAV) conference in London, ADS Gesellschaft für aktive Schutzsysteme mbH, part of Rheinmetall, has announced that its third-generation Active Defence System (ADS Gen 3) is set to conform to IEC61508 SIL 3 safety standards before the end of 2018.
ADS is a hard kill active protection system designed to be mounted on armoured vehicles. It uses radar to detect incoming threats, which are then defeated with an explosive charge detonated close to the vehicle. However, unlike many active protection systems, ADS is designed to be safely used in combination with supporting infantry.
Most current active protection systems deploy an explosive charge at some distance from the vehicle, whereupon its detonation presents a risk to nearby infantry, civilians, and property.
