Russian military to commission new ‘flying hospital’

23 January 2018

Russia’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) plans to acquire a new airmobile hospital to be carried by an Il-76MD transport aircraft, a military representative told the Izvestia newspaper on 15 January.

Designated the Il-76MA, the new variant of the transport will have a range of diagnostic, intensive care, and surgical capabilities inside three 20-tonne modules built with the dimensions of standard aviation containers.

Arriving at its destination, the airborne hospital will have sufficient supplies to operate independently for several weeks if necessary. The separate medical modules can be unloaded to provide parts of a larger field hospital as the situation warrants.
