China vows to take action after USN destroyer sails near disputed Scarborough Shoal

23 January 2018

China has accused a US Navy (USN) warship of ‘illegally’ entering what Beijing claims are Chinese territorial waters near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea (SCS), vowing to take “necessary measures” to “safeguard” Chinese sovereignty.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Beijing said in a 20 January statement that USS Hopper , an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, had sailed within 12 n miles of the shoal three days earlier without obtaining permission from the Chinese authorities.

In a separate statement the Chinese Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated that it despatched CNS Huangshan , a Jiangkai II (Type 054A)-class guided-missile frigate, to identify and warn the US vessel away.
