Spanish Navy details delivery schedule for S 80 submarines

22 January 2018

The Spanish Navy says it expects to have its first of four S 80 submarines delivered by 2021 and that the final price for the boats will be substantially more than EUR3 billion (USD3.6 billion).

It is also waiting on government approval to start the F 110 frigate programme and the new submarine rescue version of its corvette-style Buque de Acción Marítima (BAM) this year.

Ordered for EUR2.13 billion in 2004 to replace the ageing S 70s, the S 80 class has been beset by a series of production problems in recent years that have involved the lengthening of their hulls and an ongoing redesign of the independent air propulsion (AIP) system.
