On 16 January 2018, the Estonian Parliament’s National Defence Committee approved Defence Minister Jüri Luik’s choice of Brigadier General Martin Herem as the next commander of the Estonian Defence Forces (EDF), state-owned media have reported.
“Martin Herem is a modern officer who has proved himself capable of comprehensively developing the national defence system,” said Luik.
Committee Chairman Hannes Hanso said the committee endorsed Herem’s candidacy unanimously. “The [current] commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, General Riho Terras, also supported Herem as his successor,” Hanso said.
In an interview with ERR, Estonian Public Broadcasting, on 3 January, Brig Gen Herem said that although some areas could be taken from Estonia, a foreign power could not occupy all the country in just days.
