(Albanian MoD)Albania's Naval Forces (Forca Detare, FD) has extended its participation in Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) deployment in the Aegean Sea for an additional 12 months.

For this purpose, the FD's Iliria-class patrol boat, ALS Butrinti , departed Albania on 16 January to join the NATO deployment. It replaces ALS Oriku , which returned to Port of Durres with its crew of 17 sailors on 26 November 2017 after completing a year of operations with SNMG2.

Butrinti is the first of the navy’s four Iliria-class patrol boats to be updated with the Nexter Narwhal 20 mm remotely operated naval turret system under a contract signed in May 2017. The three remaining boats will be upgraded during 2018.
