Iran admits frigate seriously damaged

15 January 2018

The Iranian military has admitted that the frigate Damavand lost two crew members and was badly damaged when it hit a breakwater as it entered its home port of Bandar-e Anzali during a storm on 10 January.

Social media imagery showed the ship stuck on the breakwater, but the military initially said only minor damage.

However, military spokesman General Shahin Taghikhani told journalists on 15 January that an assessment had shown the vessels had suffered serious damage and requires a complete overhaul.
