The US government has launched a fresh round of sanctions targeting Iran’s political and defence industrial base.
The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) revealed on 12 January that it had designated 14 individuals and entities for sanction in connection with human rights abuses, censorship, and the proliferation of weapons and defence equipment to Iran.
The sanctions against defence companies included the Iran Helicopter Support and Renewal Company (PANHA) and Iran Aircraft Industries (SAHA) for “being owned or controlled by Iran’s Aviation Industries Organisation”, which has been subject to sanctions since December 2013.
OFAC noted that PANHA is a key helicopter maintenance provider, and has also built and overhauled helicopters.
