Romania’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) signed a contract for 227 Piranha 5 8×8 vehicles with General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS), both the ministry and company have announced.
Signed on 12 January and valued at over USD1 billion, the contract also covers initial logistics support for the vehicles. They will be assembled locally, with a transfer of technology between GDELS and Romanian company Uzina Mecanică București (UMB).
Six undisclosed variants are included in the order, believed to be armoured personnel carrier, infantry fighting vehicle, command, mortar, engineering/repair, and ambulance versions.
Romania is also pursuing an indigenous 8×8 vehicle programme, known as the Transportor Blindat pentru Trupe (TBT).
