US scales back search efforts for Argentine submarine

03 January 2018

The United States has begun to draw down its efforts assisting the search for Argentine submarine ARA San Juan in the South Atlantic.

The drawdown started on 27 December after the United States finished supporting specific requests from the Argentine government, US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) officials said in a statement.

ARA San Juan is a German-built TR 1700-class diesel-electric submarine. It went missing 15 November with 44 crew while in transit from Ushuaia to the city of Mar del Plata.
