Bulgaria’s new patrol boat plans in limbo

27 December 2017

Bulgaria’s plans to modernise its navy with two multifunctional modular patrol boats suffered a major setback on 20 December when MTG Dolphin, the sole bidder and winner of the contract tender, decided to withdraw its proposal.

Commenting on the issue, the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence said the main reason for the withdrawal of MTG Dolphin, a private shipyard based in Varna, was the reduction of the project value as a result of the introduction of value-added tax on all defence procurement deals that came into force in January 2017.

MTG Dolphin has declined to comment on its decision.
