DARPA seeks boost to underground operations

The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is seeking new ways to enhance the performance of troops and emergency crews in underground environments, the agency announced on 21 December.

According to DARPA, the Subterranean Challenge aims to uncover innovative approaches and new technologies that could result in improved mapping, navigation, and search techniques in environments such as cave and tunnel systems, as well as underground urban infrastructure.
