India commits to private-sector ammunition production

21 December 2017

The government of India is pushing forward with its plan to support the production of ammunition by the country’s private sector, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in New Delhi has announced.

The MoD said in a statement on 20 December that it had approved the local production of eight selected types of ammunition for the Indian Army. Companies selected to undertake the programmes would be required to establish a manufacturing facility, and would be awarded 10-year contracts in order to “facilitate a viable commercial model”, said the MoD.

It added that companies would be selected through an “open tender enquiry” process.
