Despite the ever-fluid security environment around them, the allies will not embrace a new strategic concept for NATO at their next summit in Brussels on 11-12 July 2018, although a working group could be tasked to review how to revise it, according to allied diplomats and officials. Nor is any imminent change to NATO’s nuclear doctrine expected, they said.
“Are we moving towards a new strategic concept? Well, it is possible there would be tasking to study this, which could lead to something the following year,” Francois de Kerchove, Belgium’s ambassador to NATO, told a policy audience in Brussels on 13 December organised by the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF).
