PESCO’s enabler projects should get first billing, say EU sources

Operational enablers need to be pegged as priorities among the list of 17 projects that the EU’s new Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) in defence will pursue, according to EU and NATO sources. PESCO was formally approved during meetings of EU foreign ministers and heads of government in Brussels during the week of 11–15 December.
As Donald Tusk, president of the European Council, told EU leaders during their summit in Brussels on 14 December, “Today we are launching PESCO – an ambitious, inclusive, and very pragmatic project in the field of defence.”
The list’s projects vary from harbour protection and maritime surveillance to cyber security rapid response teams.
