Spanish sub Galerna set for major overhaul

14 December 2017

Spanish S 70-class submarine Galerna is to undergo a fifth major overhaul as the navy continues to maintain the boats to cover the long-delayed arrival of the new S 80s.

Financing for the project was approved by the government on 8 December, with the EUR43.2 million (USD50.8 million) costs planned to be spread over four years up to 2020.

Galerna is one of three remaining submarines of a class of four that were originally scheduled to progressively retire as the four S 80s started to enter service from around 2012 onwards.

However, balance problems discovered during construction forced state-owned shipbuilder Navantia to call in US shipbuilder Electric Boat to help in a redesign that has involved lengthening the hull.
