The European Defence Agency (EDA) has awarded Spanish company Aertec Solutions a contract to develop a prototype laser countermeasure system for integration on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
The agency is studying critical components for military lasers and their use as wide-area sensor technologies on UAVs.
The work under the Aertec Solutions contract is due to be finished by November 2018. A company representative told Jane’s that the effort “will involve developing in miniature a prototype system of countermeasures that will include a longitude laser emitter of close infrared waves, similar to those used in thermal cameras”.
Known in-house as LaseronUAV, the system will utilise a Band 1 laser.
