The second Zumwalt-class guided-missile destroyer, Michael Monsoor (DDG 1002), departed Bath Iron Works on 4 December to start builder’s sea trials, the shipbuilder reported.
Meanwhile, the lead ship of the class, USS Zumwalt , is still undergoing combat-systems trials, US Navy (USN) officials said.
The USN’s fiscal year 2018 (FY 2018) budget submission calls for the Monsoor to be delivered in May 2021 and the third ship, Lyndon B Johnson (DDG 1002) to be delivered December 2021.
The estimated combined procurement cost for all three DDG 1000s, as reflected in the USN’s recent annual budget submission, is USD12.9 billion, the Congressional Research Service (CRS) noted in a 30 November report.
