New sniper rifles for Ratnik soldier system to be tested by end of year

The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) is planning to conduct tests of new firearms for the second-generation Ratnik-2 soldier system before the end of 2017, military officials have said.

“The goal is to conduct operational testing and evaluation [OT&E] of new firearms, including the upgraded SVD Dragunov 7.62 mm sniper rifle [SVDM], the upgraded 9 mm special sniper rifle [VSSM], and the upgraded 12.7 mm anti-materiel sniper rifle [ASVKM],” an official said on 27 November.

Rostec subsidiaries are competing in the Ratnik programme with four rifles: Kalashnikov with the 5.45 mm AK-12 and 7.62 mm AK-15 rifles, and the Degtyarev Plant with the 5.45 mm 6P67 and 7.62 mm 6P68 rifles.
