Congressional defence committees expect to do more work towards possibly implementing a new Space Corps within the US Air Force (USAF), as lawmakers remain unsatisfied with current structures for managing a growing mission in space.
“I think we will revisit the Space Corps,” Adam Smith, the top democrat on the House Armed Services Committee, told reporters during a 30 November breakfast meeting.
House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee chairman Michael Rogers proposed this year a space force within the USAF with its own chief of staff, similar to the US Marine Corps. Concrete steps towards that idea were included in the House version of the annual defence policy bill, but not the Senate version.
