On 20 November 2017 the Belarusian security service (Kamitet Dziarzhaunay Byaspeki; KDB) confirmed that it had detained Pavlo Sharoiko, a Ukrianian journalist.
Sharoiko’s employer, Ukrayinske Radio in Kiev, said he had been detained by the Belarusian KDB in Minsk on 25 October after reporting on the disappearance of Ukrainian citizen Pavlo Hryb in Homiel, Belarus, in August 2017; Hryb was later reportedly detained in Russia on terrorism charges, and remains in custody in Russia. The KDB said it had arrested Sharoiko on espionage charges, which he denied. Belarus subsequently declared a Ukrainian diplomat in Minsk persona non grata, demanding that he leave the country promptly.
