The tempo of Russian Federation Navy operations worldwide has significantly increased over the past five years, Russia’s armed forces chief General Valery Gerasimov has said.
Briefing a Russian Ministry of Defence board meeting on naval developments covering the 2013-2017 timeframe on 7 November, Gen Gerasimov, Russian chief of defence staff and first deputy defence minister, said that the navy carried out 672 missions during the five-year period, including 36 in the Arctic region and 22 in areas affected by pirate attacks.
In 2017 alone, the navy conducted 139 deployments, setting a record for the five-year period, he said. More than 650 visits to foreign ports were conducted over the same period.
