09 November 2017

Key Points

  • Yemen’s rebels have unveiled an anti-ship missile they claim to be producing.
  • The event confirmed they have Chinese C-801 missiles.

Yemen’s rebels unveiled what they said was an indigenously produced anti-ship missile called the Al-Mandab 1 on 6 November.

The event was attended by Saleh Ali al-Sammad, the president of the Supreme Political Council that governs rebel-controlled areas, who was cited as saying that the new missiles would lead to a significant shift in the balance of power with the Saudi-led coalition.

Photographs were released showing four missiles that appeared to be the same as the Chinese-made C-801: a type known to have been supplied to the Yemeni Navy to equip the three Type 021 fast attack craft that were delivered in the mid-1990s.
