Thailand’s Defence Technology Institute (DTI), an agency under the Thai Ministry of Defence (MoD), is expected to adopt greater powers to support defence industrial development as part of its transitioning to an executive government agency.
DTI officials told Jane’s on 6 November that the DTI’s transformation into the Defence Technology Agency (DTA) will proceed in 2018 once law that provides a framework for the change is passed by government.
Officials added that a key part of the establishment of the DTA would be to permit the agency to negotiate technology transfers and industrial collaboration as well as to act as a centralised procurement administrator for the Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTAF) and MoD.
