Sir Michael Fallon MP has resigned from his role as UK secretary of state for defence and has been replaced by the current government chief whip Gavin Williamson.
In his resignation letter of 1 November, Fallon cited conduct that had “fallen below the high standards that we require of the Armed Forces” as being the reason for his departure.
“I have reflected on my position and I am therefore resigning as defence secretary”, he said in a 1 November letter to UK prime minister Theresa May.
Fallon’s resignation followed a period of focus on the conduct of some members of the UK parliament.
