The US Marine Corps can manufacture small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) using highly portable 3D printing systems, Gunnery Sergeant Douglas McCue told Jane’s during the Bold Alligator amphibious exercise along the North Carolina coast.
McCue said his expeditionary 3D printing systems can create entire 'Nibbler' UAVs.
The printers are housed, he noted, in a 20 ft collapsible container that can be transported relatively easily even to remote forward locations.
“We collapse it all the way down and put it back on a 7-tonne [truck],” he said. “We can take it anywhere and everywhere. Now 3D printing is expeditionary.”
