The US Department of Defense is investigating the circumstances that led to four US soldiers being killed during a 4 October battle in Niger, the top US officer told reporters on 23 October.
A group of 12 US special forces personnel embarked on a two-day patrol with 30 Nigerien troops about 85 km north of the capital on 3 October, but during their return to base from a village the force encountered about 50 enemy fighters. A “difficult firefight” ensued and ultimately four US citizens were killed, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joe Dunford said during a Pentagon briefing.
