Dozens of Afghan security personnel have been killed and hundreds others injured in a recent wave of militant attacks targeting military bases and police compounds in several Afghan provinces.
One of the deadliest attacks took place in the evening of 18 October when Taliban insurgents attacked an Afghan National Army (ANA) base in Maiwand District, in the southern province of Kandahar, killing at least 43 of the 60 Afghan soldiers manning the base, according to the Ministry of Defense in Kabul.
Local media quoted unnamed sources as saying that the attack began when the militants detonated two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices (VBEIDs).
