Post-event analysis is underway to determine if the interception of a medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) target by a US Navy (USN) Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block 1B missile during Exercise ‘Formidable Shield 2017’ was the consummation of a Launch on Remote (LoR) engagement enabled by non-organic radar track data provided by the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNLN) air defence and command frigate HNLMS De Ruyter.
The 15 October live firing, executed in the North Atlantic as part of an integrated air and missile defense (IAMD) scenario designated Event 4, saw the SM-3 Block 1B missile fired by the DDG-51 guided missile destroyer USS Donald Cook (DDG 75) successfully destroy a Terrier Oriole MRBM target in the exo-atmosphere.
