Boeing is focusing all of its maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) attentions at this year’s International Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (ADEX) in Seoul on its P-8A Poseidon maritime multimission aircraft (MMA), following the company decision earlier this year to axe its smaller Maritime Surveillance Aircraft (MSA) stablemate.
With the US Navy (USN) showcasing one of its Poseidons at the event taking place from 17 to 22 October at Seoul Air Base, Boeing will be looking to attract regional interest in the airliner-based MMA after it revealed in June that it cancelled its business jet-based MSA due to a lack of customer interest.
The cancellation of the MSA some five years after it was launched in mid-2012 is particularly significant for the Asia-Pacific market that is the focus of the ADEX event. The MSA was showcased at the biennial event in 2015, and the securing of regional sales was one of the main objectives for the platform.
Based on the Bombardier Challenger 605 business jet, the MSA was equipped with many of the systems of its larger P-8A brethren. Other than the size differential between the MSA and the P-8A and the obvious differences that this brings in terms of capacity, range, endurance, payloads, and so forth, the key distinction between the two Boeing products, was that the Poseidon is a fully weaponised aircraft for both the anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) roles, while the MSA was not equipped with offensive weaponry of any kind. Boeing was marketing the aircraft chiefly to those countries that have a requirement to conduct missions such as counterpiracy operations, exclusive economic zone enforcement, immigration patrol, coastal and border security, and long-range search-and-rescue (SAR).
