A court in Mugla province in southwestern Turkey has handed down life sentences to 40 ex-military officers, including a former general, on 4 October, over charges related to the failed coup attempt in 2016. The condemned were charged with attempting to assassinate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and to change the constitutional order through the use of force. It was one of the highest profile trials and the first ending in heavy prison sentences for the aborted coup.
The 47 defendants included ex-general Gokhan Sahin Sonmezates, with three at large, who were convicted after a trial lasting around seven months.
