Harris readies SATCOM upgrade for USMC manpack radios

02 October 2017

The US Marine Corps (USMC) has acquired its first block of Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) waveform software upgrades for about 1,000 Harris Falcon III AN/PRC-117G multiband manpack radios under a four-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, Harris announced in late September.

The updated software will provide the radios with the ability to access the MUOS satellite system. MUOS is a government-owned waveform that provides cellular phone-like communications down to the Brigade Combat Team (BCT) and platoon levels and extends company and data voice Soldier Radio Waveform networks.

The software upgrade also includes a new MUOS antenna to facilitate access to the satellite constellation.
