The US Navy is expected to send USS Ronald Reagan , a forward-deployed Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, to waters near the Korean Peninsula in October for a joint exercise with the Republic of Korea Navy (RoKN) amid heightened tensions in the region because of North Korea's weapon development programmes, the Yonhap news agency reported.
The exercise will include anti-submarine warfare training as well as detecting, tracking, and intercepting ballistic missiles, a South Korean official was quoted as saying on condition of anonymity.
The carrier, which is based at the Yokosuka naval base in Japan, will likely be accompanied by several other warships belonging to the strike group, such as an Aegis destroyer and a guided-missile cruiser.
