China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO) has developed the GLM122 Amphibious Vehicle-Carrier Armoured Trackway (AV-CAT).
This vehicle has been designed to speed up amphibious landings by rapidly laying a trackway across sandy and muddy beaches to enable vehicles to rapidly cross the surf line and move inland without delay.
It comprises a 25 tonne tracked armoured platform with the three-person crew seated in a fully enclosed cab at the front with sections of folded trackway with the associated mechanical laying system positioned immediately behind the cab.
The vehicle is propelled in the water by two waterjets situated on either side at the rear of the all welded steel armour hull.
On emerging from the water, the GLM122 AV-CAT would rapidly lay a trackway over the front of the vehicle and then move away to allow follow-on vehicles to rapidly clear the beach.
According to NORINCO, one vehicle can lay a 35 m long and 4 m wide trackway in about five minutes. Additional systems can be deployed to increase the length of the trackway if required.
When in position it can support tracked armoured fighting vehicles (AFV) and other platforms with a combat weight of up to 40 tonnes and wheeled platforms with an axle weight of up to 15 tonnes.
The chassis of the GLM122 AV-CAT appears to be based on the Type 77 amphibious armoured personnel carrier (APC), which is the Chinese version of the Russian BTR-50 series APC.
