Angola’s newly elected President João Lourenço on 28 September appointed a new cabinet, two days after being sworn in to replace outgoing president José Eduardo dos Santos, who had been in office for 38 years.
Lourenço’s cabinet includes many senior ruling-party officials reputed to be Dos Santos loyalists, including newly appointed Minister of Defence General Salviano de Jesus Sequeira, a retired general and former secretary of state for defence. Key ministers in the previous government such as Augusto Mangueira (finance), Ângelo Tavares (interior), Marcos Nhunga (agriculture), and João Baptista Borges (power) all kept their portfolios in the new government.
