Northrop Grumman has rolled out a new unmanned ground vehicle (UGV), designed with independent tracks that enable the system to manoeuvre over obstacles, climb stairs, and handle a 60° incline.
Nomad, part of the company’s Remotec Andros line of robots, was built using the US Army’s Man Transportable Robot System (MTRS) Increment 2’s requirements as a guidepost, Matt Verock, director of land forces and protective systems at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, told Jane’s .
MTRS Increment 2 “provides a stand-off capability to detect and confirm the presence of, identify the disposition of, and counter hazards by carrying various platform payloads in support of current and future missions", according to the US Army.
The UGV that is selected for the MTRS Increment 2 programme will be required to undertake various tasks, meaning it must be capable of accommodating a range of payloads.
“With the [understanding] of what that acquisition was looking for we designed and built the Nomad platform recognising it is going to have applicability given its mobility capability,” he said.
Nomad is Interoperability Profile (IOP) compliant, which gives the system a plug-and-play capability, enabling it to be a multi-function, multi-mission UGV and align with the army’s MTRS Increment 2 effort.
“The idea is that the component, whether it is the manipulator arm, the radio, cameras, whatever effectors you put on the platform, if they follow the IOP – which is going to define mechanical, electronic, and software interfaces – then it is a going to be much easier to bring in both current and future capabilities to the platform,” Verock said.
The army is expected to make a decision on a MTRS Increment 2 platform by the end of 2017.
