Colombian Navy frigate tender expected by 2020

25 September 2017

The Colombian Navy in the next several years expects to issue an international tender to design frigates that can replace its Almirante Padilla-class.

The navy's Strategic Surface Platform (Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie: PES) expects to have Colombia’s state-run Science and Technology Corporation for the Development of Naval, Maritime, and Riverine Industries (COTECMAR) build up to eight frigates, but rely upon an international competition for the design.

“A frigate is a very complex ship, several orders of magnitude more complex than an ocean patrol vessel [OPV],” Captain Fredy Zarate Patarroyo, COTECMAR design and engineering manager, told reporters on 25 September in Cartagena.
