The Portuguese Ministry of National Defence granted approval for the Portuguese Navy to award Leonardo a maximum EUR7.1 million (USD8.4 million) contract to modernise its Black Shark heavyweight torpedoes on 21 September.
Upgrade work will take place during the 2017-2019 timeframe.
Portugal purchased 24 torpedoes from Whitehead Alenia Sisteími Subacquei (WASS), now part of Italian conglomerate Leonardo, in March 2005 to arm its two Tridente-class (Type 209PN) attack submarines.
No details were disclosed on the modernisation work; however, it is likely to be aimed at addressing obsolescence.
NRP Tridente and NRP Arpão , which are fielded from Lisbon Naval Base by 5th Submarines Squadron, are each equipped with eight 533 mm tubes and associated fire control display integrating software by Thales’ EDISOFT.
