On 18 September, the Election Commission of Pakistan announced that Kulsoom Nawaz – the wife of ousted former prime minister Nawaz Sharif – had won the by-election for the National Assembly constituency 120 (NA-120).
NA-120 was left vacant by Sharif after he was dismissed by the Supreme Court in August 2017 for being dishonest to parliament as part of a wider investigation into the Sharif family's finances stemming from the Panama Papers leak in April 2016. The result itself is unsurprising, given that the seat located in Lahore, Punjab, the Sharif family's home province and the key political stronghold of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.
