Israel’s continued airstrikes in Syria highlight its intent to enforce ‘red lines’ against greater Hizbullah rearmament

12 September 2017

On 7 September, Israel conducted an airstrike against a Syrian government facility in northwestern Syria being used to manufacture precision-guided missiles for Hizbullah.

The facility was 30 km from another site that Israeli media claimed is an Iranian missile factory, and 50 km from Russia’s S-400 air defence system in Latakia. It is unclear if Russia acquiesced to the strike ahead of time. Notably, Israel has publicly acknowledged for the first time that it has conducted more than 100 airstrikes in Syria over the past five years, most likely targeting Hizbullah commanders, weapons shipments, chemical weapons or weapon development sites.
