Leonardo’s Airborne and Space Systems division has signed a contract with RUAG Aviation to provide Seaspray 5000E surveillance radars for the two new-production model Dornier 228 multirole aircraft recently ordered by the Bangladesh Navy.
The Seaspray 5000E radar uses a mechanically rotating active electronically scanned array (AESA) antenna populated by multiple gallium arsenide transmit/receive modules arranged in a series of ‘planks’. An AESA radar can electronically steer the beam in azimuth and elevation, and interleave different functional modes (including a unique small target detection mode).
It offers improved reliability and lower costs of ownership.
Delivery of the radars is planned for 2018. According to Leonardo (Stand S5-110), the two Dornier 228 aircraft will be used to help protect Bangladesh’s 120,000km2 of maritime territorial area and exclusive economic zone.
