Germany has withdrawn its Tornados from Incirlik, Turkey, and will redeploy them to Al-Asraq, Jordan, by October, the Bundeswehr announced on 8 August. The reconnaissance aircraft flew their last mission from Incirlik on 29 July and returned to Germany on 31 July.
It is planned to deploy up to six Tornados to Al-Asraq to resume reconnaissance flights in support of the coalition fighting the Islamic State.
The aircraft have now returned to their home base in Büchel for maintenance and to conduct training flights.
They cannot be maintained in Al-Asraq until the necessary tools arrive and cannot fly reconnaissance flights until ground exploitation stations have been moved and set up to analyse the images they collect, the Bundeswehr points out.
