US drills ground attack and special operations aircraft in non-NATO Finland and Baltic states

07 August 2017

US forces including 10 A-10 Thunderbolt II 'Warthog' close air-support aircraft, an MC-130J Commando II, and some 270 personnel began a 16-day deployment to Ämari air force base and Jägala army base in Estonia on 4 August, the US European Command (EUCOM) has announced.

The A-10s will train in Finland with Finnish Air Force F/A-18C Hornets, with Spanish Air Force EF-18A Hornets from NATO's Baltic air policing mission in Estonia, and in Latvia with multinational joint terminal attack controllers, within each of the nations' airspace and in international airspace.

US training in non-NATO member Finland is enabled through a bilateral defence agreement, signed in October 2016 because of mounting regional tensions.
