Argentina moving forward on multiple defence acquisitions

01 August 2017

Argentine President Mauricio Macri on 31 July signed a decree authorising state credit to finance some of the major defence acquisition programmes included in the 2017 budget.

The decree, published on 1 August, stated that the executive authorises public credit for projects to buy offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the navy, as well as Beechcraft T-6C+ Texan II aircraft, PT6A-68 engines and support, medium transport aircraft, and 9x19 mm pistols and assault rifles for all the armed forces.

Argentina’s main interest for OPVs is four DCNS L’Adroit-class vessels for about EUR400 million (USD471 million).

A contract was signed for 12 Texan IIs and the first two were planned to arrive this year, but delays on payment authorisation led to complications.
