Hardened German stance towards Turkey includes closer scrutiny of arms exports

24 July 2017

Germany is reviewing relations with Ankara in a wide range of areas, including arms exports. Asked for confirmation of a 21 July report in the tabloid newspaper Bild that arms exports to Turkey were being frozen, a German Economics Ministry spokesman told Jane's on 24 July that all licences for such exports are being reviewed.

He added that exports to Turkey already came under "more differentiated and careful individual scrutiny" after the failed coup in July 2016. "Special weight is given to the current situation, especially regarding human rights – and this is also true for Turkey .... At the same time, we are continuously aligning our approval practices with those of our EU partners."
