Commission's defence fund plan takes hits from left- and right-wing MEPs

In a rare common viewpoint, left- and certain right-wing members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have lambasted the European Commission's plan to use EU money to finance defence research and acquisition programmes, calling it a "militarisation of the union" and a move "toward a European army".

During a 4 July plenary debate in Strasbourg over the Commission's proposed European Defence Fund (EDF), Green and Conservative MEPs disputed the plan's legal rationale, accusing Jyrki Katainen and Federica Mogherini - respectively, the European Commissioner for investment and the EU's foreign and defence policy chief - of perverting the EU's constitution and saying it would undercut NATO.
