The US warning of consequences in relation to the Syrian military preparing to use chemical weapons seems to have prevented another attack, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told reporters on 28 June.
"It appears that they took the warning seriously," he said during a visit to Europe.
The warning took the form of White House statement released two days earlier that said the United States had identified "potential preparations for another chemical attack" similar to those made before the attack on Khan Shaykhun on 4 April that killed and injured hundreds of civilians.
It added that President Bashar al-Assad and his military would "pay a heavy price" for another "mass murder attack" on civilians.
