Metal Shark shipbuilder to supply multiple Latin American, US FMS customers

26 June 2017

The US Navy has selected Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark, teamed with the Netherlands' Damen Shipyards Group, to build Near Coastal Patrol Vessels (NCPVs) for the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme.

The deal is "potentially worth upwards of USD54 million" and Metal Shark will build up to 13 85-ft Defiant-class welded aluminium cutters "for the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Guatemala", and other US partner nations, Metal Shark said in a 23 June statement.

Also included are electro-optical infrared sensors, diagnostic equipment, in-country reactivation, crew familiarisation, and test support, the company said.

The vessels are based on Damen Shipyards' Stan Patrol 2606 design and "tailored by Metal Shark to suit the requirements of the NCPV mission" the company said, noting that the vessels are optimised for search-and-rescue, border patrol, police and customs duties, counter-narcotics, and similar operations.
