Vehicle-impact attack targeting Muslims outside London mosque highlights growing risk of cycle of violence between UK communities

19 June 2017

On 19 June, shortly after midnight local time, a 48-year-old man drove a van into a crowd of Muslim worshippers who had just left a mosque on Seven Sisters Road in Finsbury Park, North London.

A man who was receiving first aid treatment on the pavement at the time of the attack has since died; eight people were hospitalised. The suspect was immobilised by bystanders until his arrest. Police claim to have arrived at the scene around ten minutes after the first alert. While London police are treating the incident as a likely terrorist attack, the exact motives of the attacker remain unverified at the time of writing.
