Japan has ‘no plans’ to hand technology subsidies to foreign firms

The Japanese Ministry of Defense (MoD) has stated that it has no plans to allow foreign entities to apply for funding through its expanding defence technology funding programme.

Reports in Japan have stated recently that the MoD’s Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency (ATLA) was considering allowing foreign agencies to apply for MoD subsidies to boost collaboration with local industry.

However, a spokesperson from ATLA told Jane’s on 16 June that funding would continue to only be available to Japanese firms and agencies. The funding programme – the ‘Innovative Science & Technology Initiative for Security’ – was introduced in 2015 but has recently expanded significantly.
